Why it matters now
Britain regulates smart charge points in its own right, separately from the vehicle, and the obligations sit with whoever places the unit on the market.
What the work actually involves
Two distinct benches. Pack and module work wants a supply that sources and sinks from the same terminals, so a charge-discharge cycle is one instrument rather than a supply, a load bank and the cooling for it — and at pack voltages that means the 1500 V and above classes. Charge-point work is different: the equipment has to demonstrate behaviour against a supply that can be disturbed on demand, and the evidence has to survive being read by somebody else a year later.
