Def Stan 59-411 against MIL-STD-461

Britain's defence EMC standard, and the two tests the American one does not have.

Issue 3 was published in June 2019, superseding Issue 2. MIL-STD-461H was published on 17 April 2026, replacing Rev G after a decade — which makes the comparison newly worth writing.

Why this reaches the test bench

Test codes carry a leading D for Defence: DCE, DCS, DRE, DRS. DCE02 measures signal-line emissions on external cables and on intra-system cables longer than 0.5 m, at the same limits as power lines — MIL-STD-461F had no signal-line emissions test at all. DCS09 is a lightning surge test; MIL-STD-461 has no explicit lightning surge up to Rev F. Issue 3 also harmonised the 10 kHz to 30 MHz rod antenna method with NATO AECTP-501 and changed the counterpoise from bonded to isolated, which invalidates older test set-ups.

How this differs from the American regime

MIL-STD-461H is the current American document. A supplier who knows only -461 will be surprised by DCE02 and DCS09.

Why we do not quote this document

Issue 3 is believed current — no Issue 4 was found — but the DStan catalogue could not be checked directly because it is SSO-gated. Treat 'Issue 3 is current' as probable rather than confirmed.
